About Richard Gordon, Founder and President:
Richard S. Gordon is an attorney in private practice in New York City. He also is a political strategist and advisor to numerous elected officials and candidates on the state, local and federal levels.
Richard has worked in government, law, politics and business. After graduating from law school, Richard joined Botein Hays & Sklar, then called Botein Hays, a large law firm in New York specializing in commercial litigation. While there, he also focused on numerous election law matters, becoming an expert in ballot access issues. After leaving the practice to work for Governor Mario Cuomo of New York, Richard returned to the practice of law, becoming an environmental lawyer at Sive, Paget & Riesel. |
Richard left the practice of law to work for Evan Bayh, then the Governor of Indiana. Following his work with Governor Bayh, Richard was the executive vice president of a publicly traded health care company and its related nursing home and medical managed care companies. He later became a partner in the international trade firm, Fontheim Partners, and still later at McKenna, Long & Aldridge, an international law firm of more than 400 lawyers and public policy advisors, working in their Government Affairs practice.
Richard established GLF in 2009 as a means of advising corporate clients on the complex issues they face in dealing with governments on every level and in expanding their markets. His work is multidimensional, stretching into the areas of public policy, law, government relations, public relations, media, strategic planning and crisis management. He assists clients in finding ways to grow and develop their businesses, marketing decisions, public policy analysis and advice on the state, national, and international level. Other experts in the field have named him a key national government affairs strategist, directing and managing complex strategic and policy related issues that have multi-state implications, citing his significant experience. His practice focuses on state and local government procurement, business development, and corporate and not-for-profit strategic planning. He works closely with clients to strategically position them on business, political and other policy-related matters.
Richard has been active politically for over 30 years. Starting with working on local congressional and gubernatorial campaigns when he was very young, Richard has served as an advisor to candidates and elected officials at every level of state, local and national politics. For five years, Richard served as director of policy and planning for Governor Evan Bayh of Indiana. As such, he was the architect of the Governor’s education, workforce, healthcare and environmental programs. He also ran the Governor’s “Capital for a Day Program”, a program where the capital of Indiana was moved from city to city around the state thereby bringing government closer to the people it serves. Richard also served as co-director of Senator-elect Bayh’s transition team, and was a senior advisor to his presidential campaign.
Prior to working for Governor Bayh, Richard was executive director of the Friends of Mario M. Cuomo, Governor Cuomo’s authorized political committee. He also served on Vice President Mondale’s presidential campaign staff where he focused on issues of concern to senior citizens and was an aide to Senator Claude Pepper, and was a member of the media team. Richard was also on the staff of Congressmen from New Jersey and Michigan. In 1992 he was appointed a Clinton/Gore member of the Democratic National Committee’s Platform Committee. He is a member of the chairman’s board of the Democratic Governors’ Association and an advisor to the chair, positions he has held since the board’s inception. He is also a member of the Republican Governors’ Association and a member of its Finance Council, as well as being active in the United States Conference of Mayors.
In addition to his business activities, Richard has spent a large portion of his career in community and public service. Elected in 2007, Richard served as president of the American Jewish Congress, an internationally renowned 90 year old not-for-profit organization dedicated to protecting and defending the constitutional and human rights of all Americans. In May 2008, President George W. Bush appointed Richard to serve on the Honorary Delegation to accompany the President to Jerusalem for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel. After serving five years as president, Richard was elected chair in 2012 where he served until 2014. He is also on the board, a member of the executive committee and national treasurer of Blessings in a Backpack, an organization that provides food to children on the free and reduced lunch program for the weekend.
Mr. Gordon also provides commentary and political analysis for television and radio, appearing frequently on WGN-TV's "Politics Tonight" and on WGN radio's podcast, "Behind the Curtain". He is a frequent lecturer on political, governmental and international affairs, including presenting lectures at Rutgers University Institute of Public Affairs, War Studies University (Warsaw, Poland) and IDC Herzliya (Herzliya, Israel), amongst others.
Richard received his Law Degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Rochester where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
